Ginseng is a genus of 11 species of slow growing perennials with fleshy roots. It grows in the cooler climates in Northern Hemisphere, in eastern Asia, mostly in China, Korea and eastern Siberia. Southern most ginsengs were discovered in Vietnam. Ginseng is a low plant with three to five leaves on top, each leaf consisting of five leaflets. The plant has a long and fleshy root, shape of which resembles to human body. The name ginseng is derived from the Chinese term meaning ‘like-human-body’.

Ginseng is used extensively in Chinese medicines. Roots of ginseng are taken orally as aphrodisiacs, nourishment stimulants, and sexual dysfunction in men and in the treatments of Type II diabetes. Besides the medicinal use, ginseng is also used in popular energy drinks, tea and varieties of food items and cosmetic preparations. Ginseng is often promoted as a product that increases the body resistance against stress. In the modern science, although several controversies exist about the efficacy of ginseng as a medicine but it has often been widely acknowledged as an excellent dietary supplement.

Flowering Maple is a genus of about 150 species herbs and shrubs native to temperate regions of Africa, Asia and North and South America. It is a large genus of broad leaf evergreens in the mallow family. The genus includes annuals, perennials that grow about 1-10 meter tall. Leaves are unlobed or lobed with 3-7 lobes. Leaves are usually heart shaped. Flowers are conspicuous with five petals that are mostly red, pink, yellow, white or orange. Flowers grow in clusters.

The name flowering maple comes from maple shaped leaves of the plant. However, the genus is not related to true maples. Chinese bell flower, Chinese lantern, Mallow and Indian mallow are few common names of the species. Flowering maples can be found abundantly in the tropical and subtropical regions of all the continents. Majority of the genus of mallow family are herbaceous perennials with some or the other economic uses; however, none of the species is a crop plant.

Cowslip is a wild flower native to temperate regions of Northern Hemisphere. Cowslip is also known as Kingcup or Marsh Marigold. The plant often grows in wet and boggy places such as marshes, fens, ditches and wet woods. Cowslips bear large, buttercup like blossoms on hollow branching stems. Its leaves are kidney shaped. In the springs, the leaves are cooked like spinach. Flowers are pink, white or lilac. Cowslip is an herbaceous perennial plant that grows to 80 cm tall.

In England, cowslip is one of the most ancient British native plants where it dots English Meadows in early spring. In UK, names of cowslips are different depending upon the geographical regions. Most common name is marigold refers to its use in churches in medieval times during Easter as a tribute to the Virgin Mary. Marigold is a plant that is often mentioned in literatures including Shakespeare. All parts of cowslip plants are considered as irritant or poisonous. Skin rashes and dermatitis are often caused by excessive handling of the plants.

Coreopsis is a large group of plants related to sunflower family. Commonly known as tickseed, Coreopsis has about 35 species, out of which 28 species are native to North America and the rest come from South and Central America. Coreopsis flowers are usually yellow with a toothed tip. The plants have showy flowerhead with involucral bracts in two distinct series of eight each, outer being commonly connate at the base. Plants grow from 1.5 to 4 feet high. Yellow, red or maroon flowers look like daisies and grow on slender stems. Coreopsis is the Greek term meaning bedbug.

Majority of the Coreopsis plants are perennials that live for several years while few of the species are annuals and live only for one season. Annual Coreopsis is often called as calliospsis. The plant has bout 30 species and is native to Southern Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia. Several species of Candytuft are cultivated especially as garden flowers. Leaves, stems and roots of Candytuft possess medicinal properties. Seeds are considered as the most efficacious. In the ancient times, the plant was often used as medicine for the treatments of rheumatism, gouts and many other diseases. If taken in large doses, Candytuft can cause giddiness, nausea and diarrhea. The plant is also useful in cardiac hypertrophy, asthma and bronchitis.

Bindweed is a genus of flowering plant with long string like stems that twist over other plants. It is also called as morning glory. Annual is a plant that usually grows from seeds, blossoms, produces flowers and seeds and dies withing one year. Annual plant generally refers to a plant that is grown outdoors in the spring and summer and survives just for one growing season. Many food plants including domesticated grains are grown as annuals. Some of the perennials and biennials are also grown in gardens as annuals mainly for convenience. Examples of true annual plants are pea, corn, lettuce, cauliflower, bean, watermelon and marigold. Once the plants die, the seeds live on to produce plants in future. Majority of the annuals live for their whole life from one spring to fall growing season. Winter annual species begin to grow in autumn, live through winter, produce seeds and die the following spring or summer. Annual garden flowers have various colors, shapes, sizes and blooming period. Several desert species have a seed-to-seed life cycle of only few weeks with seeds spending most of the year to survive dry conditions.
