Candytuft is a flowering plant of the mustard family. Candytuft is a favorite flower of both borders and beds in the gardens of old-fashioned flowers. The name is thought to have originated from Island of Crete, which was earlier known as Candia. During the 16th century, it was brought from Crete to England. Candytuft grows about a foot tall with white, pink or purple flower clusters. Purple and the evergreen varieties are the best known varieties of Candytuft.

Globe Candytuft is a garden variety that grows up to 16 inches. Red, lavender or pink blossoms grow in dense clusters on Globe Candytuft. The plant has bout 30 species and is native to Southern Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia. Several species of Candytuft are cultivated especially as garden flowers. Leaves, stems and roots of Candytuft possess medicinal properties. Seeds are considered as the most efficacious. In the ancient times, the plant was often used as medicine for the treatments of rheumatism, gouts and many other diseases. If taken in large doses, Candytuft can cause giddiness, nausea and diarrhea. The plant is also useful in cardiac hypertrophy, asthma and bronchitis.

Bugbane or baneberry is a genus of flowering plant native to temperate regions of Northern Hemisphere. It is a tall, perennial plant with large broad leaves divided into many leaflets. The plant has clusters of small white flowers. The name bugbane originally referred to a flowering plant that grows in Asia and Eastern Europe. Due to its typical unpleasant odor, it was used to keep bed bugs away. White baneberry, red baneberry and black bugbane are few other well-known species of baneberry.

Baneberry contains cardiogenic toxins that can have immediate sedative effects on human cardiac muscle tissue. Berries are the most poisonous parts of the entire plant. Ingestion of bugbane berries can often lead to immediate cardiac arrest and death. Berries are harmless to birds. Birds are the primary seed dispersers for bugbanes. Bugbane is the only species of its family that have fleshy fruits while others have dry fruits. Baneberry is recorded as the food plant for the larvae of Dot Moth. Roots of some of the species of baneberry were used by Native Americans for menstrual cramping and for the relief from menopausal discomforts.

Bindweed is a genus of flowering plant with long string like stems that twist over other plants. It is also called as morning glory. Bachelor’s Button is a small annual flowering plant native to Europe. The plant grows to about 40-90 cm high with grayish green branched stems. Its small flowers are shaped liked and thus the name Bachelor’s Button. Flowers are usually blue but some of the varieties may have pink, purple or white blossoms. Bachelor’s buttons are also called as cornflowers or bluebottles.

Originally, Bachelor’s button grew wild in Europe, north of the Mediterranean, but later on, it has spread widely in many parts of the world. In fact, it often grew as a weed in crop fields growing grains such as wheat, rye, barley or oats. In North America, Australia and other countries, the plant has been naturalized as an ornamental plant in gardens. The plant has also been often prized historically for its blue pigment. It is also often used as an ingredient in tea blends and herbal teas. As per the folklore, Bachelor’s Button was worn by young men in love. If the flower faded quickly, it was construed that the man’s love was unrequited.

Artichoke is a perennial flowering plant native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean. The plant grows about 5-7 feet tall with deeply lobed, arching and silvery green leaves. New plants of Artichoke are generally grown from sprouts or shoots of the older ones. The plants can live for years. Commercial varieties of Artichoke are usually replanted every three or four years. Although Artichoke is technically a perennial but certain species are also grown as annuals that provide a limited harvest at the end of the first growing season. Commercial Artichoke requires good soil, regular watering and feeding in addition to frost protection during winter. Peak season for Artichoke harvesting is the spring. Under standard conditions, Artichoke can remain fresh for two weeks. Besides its use as food, Artichoke is also an attractive plant for its bright floral display. Occasionally, Artichoke is grown in herbaceous borders for its bold foliage and large purple flowerheads.

In Vancouver islands, Arbutus bark and leaves are often used to crate medicines for cold, stomach problems, tuberculosis and as the basis for contraceptives. Although the fruits of Arbutus are edible but it is rarely eaten, as it has minimal flavor. Besides, Arbutus is a great fuelwood because it burns hot and long.

Anemone flowers are bisexual and radially symmetric and come in white, purple, blue, green, yellow, pink or red colors. Its fruits are achenes. In North America, wood variety of Anemone is most common that can grow even in high mountainous areas. Besides, Anemone is also grown abundantly in England and Central Europe. Japanese Anemone is considered as the most unusual variety, which grows up to 3 feet height and has flowers that are three inches across. Many of Anemone species are favorite garden plants. The plants grow best in a loamy soil enriched with well-rotten manure. Anemone plants should be dug in below the tubers.

Aster is a flowering plant. With more than 175 species, Aster is a very common in the United States. Aster also grows in Asia, Europe and South America. All species of asters need rich soil and sunlight for its proper growth. Regardless of its taxonomic change, all species are referred to as asters in horticultural trades. Number of petals in aster species is a Fibonacci number.
