Bougainvillea is a flowering plant native to South American countries from Brazil west to Peru and from south to southern Argentina. As per different botanists, there can be four to eighteen species of Bougainvillea genus. The name Bougainvillea comes from the name of an Admiral in French Navy who discovered the plant in Brazil. Bougainvillea grows to a height of more than 3 meters (10 feet) and up to a height of about 12 meters with thorny and woody vines. Leaves are alternate measuring about 4-13 cm long and 2-6 cm broad. Small white flowers surrounded by large and colorful bracts of red, purple, pink, orange or pale yellow grow on the plant. Flowers grow in the clusters of three enclosed by 3-6 bracts. Bracts are papery and thin and thus sometimes the flowers are called ‘Paper Flowers’. Several cultivars and hybrid plants in thorn-less varieties have been cultivated all over the world. Bougainvilleas are rapid growing and all-year flowering plants.
