Sweet Pea is a flowering plant native to the eastern Mediterranean region. The plant is annual climbing plant that grows up to 1-2 meters tall. In California, thousands of acres of land have been cultivated for growing sweet peas. Sweet peas are broadly divided into categories dwarf and tall. The plant should be grown in cooler climates and in rich and well-drained soils.

Leaves are pinnate with two leaflets. Lowers are purple and broad in the wild plant. In cultivated varieties, the flowers are large with variable colors. Seeds of the sweet pea plants are poisonous unlike most of the other peas. Consumption of sweet peas by human beings and animals can cause many diseases with symptoms similar to scurvy and copper deficiency, as the seeds contain toxins. Sweet pea plants are mostly grown for their brightly colored flowers and sweet fragrance. Since last couples of years, annual sweet pea shows are conducted at many cities all over the world.
