Spring Beauty or Claytonia is a genus of 25 species of flowering plants mostly native to North America. Few species exist in Guatemala, South America and northeastern Asia. The plant blooms in early spring in Nova Scotia, Georgia and Texas and in the western United States. Spring beauty plants can be found in lawns, woods and thickets. One of the species known as miner’s lettuce is distributed throughout mountains west of North America in moist soils. This particular species was used by the miners as fresh green salad during the 1849 Gold Rush in California and from when the name miner’s lettuce has become a commonly popular name.
