Rhododendron is a large genus of about 1000 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. Rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal. The genus is characterized by shrubs and small to medium large trees, smallest species being 10-100 cm tall and largest species over 30 meters tall. Leaves are spirally arranged and either evergreens or deciduous. Leaves of some of the species are covered by scales or hairs on their undersides. Many of the species are well-known all over the world for their large clusters of beautiful flowers.

Rhododendron is a very widely distributed species throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere except for dry areas and extending into Southern Hemisphere in southeastern Asia and northern Australasia. Greatest diversity of Rhododendrons is found in the Himalayan mountains Uttarakhand, Nepal and Sikkim to Sichuan and in the mountains of Indo-China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan. In Europe and North America, relatively fewer species are found and in South America and Africa, Rhododendrons have not yet been found. Rhododendrons are extensively used in gardening, landscapes and ornamental plants.
