Protea is both the botanical and common English name for a genus of about 120 species of flowering plants. Plants are also sometimes called as sugarbushes. The plant was named after the Greek God Proteus who could change his form at will and likewise Protea also has different forms. The plant is native to Africa and grows to height of 3-10 feet. Most common species of protea plants is the giant Protea, called as King Protea.

Protea bears large flowers, which vary widely in color, size and shape depending upon the type of species. Flower heads are surrounded by many overlapping bracts, which may be white, pink or red. The plant grows best in dry summers, mild, and wet winters. The plants require well-drained and slightly acidic soils. In California, Protea is cultivated in large scale for its use as ornamental plants. Protea has been treated as national flower or symbol in South Africa. Some of the national sporting teams of South Africa are also referred to as “The Proteas”
