Poppy is the common name for a large numbers of flowering plants of poppy family. The genus also includes large numbers of attractive wild flower species, garden varieties and small plants grown in rock or alpine gardens. Opium poppy is grown for opium or poppy seeds that are used in cooking and baking. Poppies are often considered as symbol of sleep and death; sleep due to the opium and death due to the common blood-red color. In ancient times, poppy flowers were used as offerings to the dead. Golden poppy is the state flower of California.
Flowers grow typically one per stem and the color may be white, pink, yellow, orange, red and blue. Seeds of opium poppies are widely used in various food items in Central and Eastern Europe. Sweetened seeds are eaten along with pastas, boiled with milk, or used as toppings on pastries. Milling of poppy seeds is often done at many homes. Besides, poppy seeds are popular in many Indian, Russian, German, Romanian and Austrian cuisines. Poppy has also appeared in literary works, best known being in the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’.
