Poinsettia is a species of flowering plants native to Mexico and Guatemala. The plant is named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first Ambassador of United States to Mexico in 1828. The plant is most popular around Christmas holidays. Association of Poinsettia plant with Christmas began in Mexico in the 16th Century. All across North America and at many other parts all over the world, Poinsettia plants can be found in Christmas decorations at homes, offices, churches and shopping centers.

Poinsettia plant is mainly grown for its great clusters of bright scarlet leaves at the ends of long stems. Inconspicuous flowers grow at the center of the cluster of leaves. Leaves being more prominent than flowers are often referred to as flowers. Foliage leaves are deeply lobed and bright green. Poinsettias are often grown in large quantities in greenhouses in United States. In Florida and California, the plant is grown outdoors where it can survive as perennial for a long period. Besides extensive use as decoration plant, Poinsettias are also used to some extent in medicines.
