Plantain is a species of crop plants. Fruit of a tropical plant of plantain look like banana. However, in contrast to the soft banana, the fruit of plantain is hardy and starchy (with less sugar) and is generally used for cooking. In the tropical regions, plantain fruit has become a common food item, where it is also used for making flours. The plant is often called as banana plantain. Plantain species are indigenous to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and northern Australia.

Common plantain or broad leaf plantain is a species that generally bothers gardeners. Light green leaves grow from roots in circular clusters. Tall, slender spikes grow from the center of the clusters. During summer, the spikes are thickly covered with tiny green flowers. Another common variety is narrow leaf plantains that has narrow leaves and short, thick spikes. Leaves of seaside plantains are used as medicines for healing inflammation. Besides, the seeds of many species of plantains are used as laxatives.
