Phlox is a genus of about 65 species of annual or perennial flowering plants native to temperate North America. Few species are native to northeastern Asia. The plants can be found growing widely in diverse habitats from alpine locations to woodlands and prairies. The plant has been named due to its flame-colored flowers from the Greek word that translates into flame.

Phlox flowers range in color from pale blue to bright red to white. Some of the species grow to a height of 1.5 meters while few species form low mats only few centimeters in height. Phlox species are a popular food source for rabbits, deers and groundhogs. Phlox plants are among the most abundant and showy flowers among all the wild species. Lavender varieties are found widely in moist woodlands throughout north central and northeastern regions of America. Pink-flowered species grow in dense tufts on rocky ledges. Large varieties of Phlox plants are grown all over the world as garden plants.
