Periwinkle is a genus of five species of flowering plants native to Europe, northwest Africa and southwest Asia. The plants are sub-shrubs or herbaceous with slender trailing stems about 3-6 feet long above ground. Stems often take roots where they touch ground and thus enabling the plant to spread widely. Leaves are generally in opposite arrangements, long, broad and evergreens. Violet or white flowers grow almost throughout the year. Periwinkle plants and flowers are often as coverings on graves in cemeteries.

The plant grows well in shady places. Vine species of the plants are grown from the cuttings of the stems. Annuals are grown from the seeds of the plants. Big leaf periwinkle is an ideal ground cover for mountain areas of moderate climates in Southern California. It is fire retardant as well as relatively drought resistant. The plant grows thick enough to reduce erosion on hillsides. Besides, the plant is invasive enough to remove undesired grass and bushes. Periwinkle plant generally does not require major maintenance and can thrive even at elevations over 6000 feet.
