Passionflower or passion vines are a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants, most of the species being vines. Some species are shrubs and herbaceous plants. The species is found almost all over the world except Europe and Antarctica. About nine species are native to USA and rests of the other species are found in South America, China, Southern Asia, New Guinea, New Zealand and Australasia. Many species have also been naturalized beyond the native places. For example, blue, yellow and purple passionflower varieties have been cultivated in many tropical regions as commercial crops.

Passionflower is a climbing or trailing vine. Flowers are generally purple to white. Scarlet variety is grown widely as ornamental plant. Fruit of passionflower, known as passion fruit, is of the size apple and is edible. In California, the Caribbean and South Africa, passion fruit is used for making commercial drinks from its pulp and juice. Fresh or dried leaves of some of the species are used in the treatments of insomnia, hysteria, epilepsy and as painkillers.
