Mustard is the common name for many of the herbaceous species of mustard family. The mustard family includes many familiar garden plants such as cabbage, broccoli, rapeseed, radish and turnip. Height of the plant varies from few inches to several feet depending upon the type of the species. Flowers of mustard plants are generally white or yellow and seeds contained in elongated pods.

Small seeds of the plant, known as mustard seeds, are commonly used a spice. A condiment known as mustard is produced by grinding and mixing the seeds with water, vinegar or any other liquid. Extracts from mustard seeds is used in making mustard oil. Leaves of mustard plants, known as mustard greens, are edible. Lately, lots of research has been carried out on the high-oil content mustard varieties for use in the production of bio-diesels and renewable liquid fuels. Bio-diesel made from mustard has been found to possess good cold flow properties. Besides, the leftover meal after processing of mustard has been to be an effective pesticide.
