Lime is a genus of about 30 species of trees native to most of the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Asia, Europe and eastern North America. Greatest diversity in the lime species can be found in Asia. The trees are called lime in Britain and linden in parts of Europe and United States. Lime tree is a large deciduous tree that can grow to a height of 20-40 meters. Linden was originally adjective that was used for ‘made from lime-wood’ but it has also become a noun.

Neither the name nor the lime tree is related to citrus fruit called lime. Basswood is another common name for lime tree in North America. The name basswood is derived from ‘bast’, which is the name for inner bark. Sturdy trunk of lime tree stands tall like a pillar. Various branches divide and subdivide into numerous ramifications, which are profusely clothed with large leaves during summer, making it a dense head of abundant foliage. Leaves are one-sided and heart shaped. Tiny fruits, looking like peas, hang attached to a ribbon-like greenish-yellow bract. Lime tree is used an ornamental tree where a mass of foliage or deep shade is desired. Flowers of lime trees are used for herbal tea in Europe.
