Lilac is a genus of about 25 species of flowering plants in the olive family native to Europe and Asia. Lilac is one of the most favorite garden plants. The plants are often planted in groups to form masses of shrubbery or hedges. Some of the most famous gardens displaying large varieties of lilacs are located in France, Jamaica plains and New York. Besides, large clusters of fragrant light purple flowers can be found at several places in Europe. Lilacs grow best in full sunlight, non-acidic and well-drained soils.

Lilacs are deciduous shrubs or small trees that grow from 2 to 10 meter height. Leaves are arranged in opposite arrangements. Shape of the leaves many be simple or heart shaped in most species while the leaves may be pinnate in few species. Flowers grow in spring. Each flower is 5-10 mm in diameter with a four-lobed corolla. Usual color of the flower is light purple or lilac. However, white and pale pink flowers can also be found. Several species have a strong pleasant fragrance. Fruits of lilac plants are dry brown capsules that split into two parts at maturity to release two-winged seeds.
