Jonquil is one of the several yellow narcissus genuses of flowering plants native to southern Europe and northern Africa. Narcissus is the botanical name for a genus of hardy, spring flowering bulbs in the Amaryllis family. The name comes from the Latin word that translates into rush. Jonquils are planted in autumn. Daffodil is the most common English name for almost all the varieties of narcissus. Narcissus plant is thought to have been named after its narcotic properties.

Jonquil bears 3-6 flowers on a stalk, which is about one-foot high. Petals of the flowers are grouped around a tube of size one-inch. Leaves are sword shaped and flowers are bright yellow. Jonquil is the most commonly used name in southeastern United States where it is also referred to as buttercups. All the species contain alkaloid poison mostly in the bulb and partly in the leaves. In the ancient Japanese medicines, the roots of the plants mixed with white flour paste are used for healing the wounds. Due to Calcium Oxalate in the sap of the plants, florists who excessively handle the plants often suffer from Dermatitis.
