Gardenia is a genus of about 250 species of flowering plants native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, Australasia and Oceania. Gardenia is named after Dr. Alexander Garden, a well-known Scottish-born American naturalist. Cape Jasmine is a species of gardenia that is raised in China for its fruit containing yellow dye. Some of the species are used for extracting gum from its bark. In South Africa, the plants are extensively used for obtaining strong hardwood.

Gardenia are evergreen shrubs and small trees that grow to about 1-15 meter height. Leaves are opposite or in whorls of three or four and are dark green with a leathery texture. Flowers are solitary or in small clusters with a tubular corolla with 5-12 lobes. Flowers are white or pale yellow. Flowers grow from mid-spring to mid-summer. Several varieties are strongly scented. In USA and Europe, the plants are grown for their beautiful and fragrant blossoms. Although most of the species are cultivated in greenhouses but a few varieties can also be grown outdoors.
