Forsythia is a genus of flowering plant that has about 10 species. Forsythia, named after William Forsyth, a Scottish Botanist. Most of the species are native to Eastern Asia with the exception of one of the species that is native to southeastern Europe. Forsythia is best known for its relevance in children’s games ‘rabbit’ that has emerged in 20th century. Bright yellow petals of the shrub look like bananas, which the children pretend to eat. Forsythia plants are ornamental and conspicuous due to its beautiful flowers, which bloom in abundance in early spring before the leaves appear.

Forsythia is a deciduous shrub that grows to a height of 1-3 meter with rough grayish brown bark. Leaves are opposite with a basal pair of small leaflets. Leaves are dark green and remain up to late fall. Flowers grow in the early spring before the leaves. Flowers are bright yellow with a deeply four-lobed corolla. Fruit is a dry capsule containing several winged seeds. Forsythia plants grow abundantly in the United States.
