Flax, also known as common flax and linseed is a plant, which is grown for its fiber and seeds. Flax is native to a wide region extending from the eastern Mediterranean to India. In ancient Egypt, flax was cultivated extensively. Flax is an erect plant, which grows to about 1.2 meter height and with slender stems. Leaves are green and slender. Flowers are pale blue with five petals. Fruit is a round, dry capsule containing several glossy brown seeds.

Fibers from flax plants are used to make linen fabrics and many other products such as rope, thread and paper. Unspun fibers of flax plants are also referred to as flax. Seeds of flax plants contain linseed oil, which is primarily used in the manufacture of paints and varnishes. Besides, almost all the parts of the flax plants are used in making numerous products including medicines, dye, fishing nets, cattle feeds, paints and soaps, among other. Flaxseed or linseed oil is used as vegetable oil in many parts of the world.
