Dandelion is a large genus of flowering plant native to Europe, North America and Asia. They have very small flowers collected together into a composite flowerhead, each single flower being called as floret. The name dandelion has been derived from a French term meaning lion’s tooth and the name was given because of the toothed margins of its leaves. The plant is biennial or perennial plant native to temperate areas of Northern Hemisphere.

Leaves of dandelions are 5-25 cm long, simple and basal and entire or lobed. The flowerhead is yellow to orange colored, which is open in day times but closes at night. A rosette may produce several flowering stems at a time. Flower heads mature into a spherical clock containing many single seeded fruits called achenes. Fresh and young leaves are often used in salads. Dried, roasted and powdered roots are also sometimes used in coffee. Besides, the dandelion plant also has great medicinal properties. Away from the native region, dandelions have also been established almost throughout the world. Dandelions possess antioxidant properties.
