Mullein is a genus of about 250 species of flowering plants of native to Europe and Asia with highest diversity in the Mediterranean region. Mullein is a biennial or perennial plant that grows 0.5-3 meters tall. Common mullein, moth mullein and white mullein varieties have been introduced in the United States, moth variety being grown mainly for its beautiful flowers.

Leaves of mullein are large, thick and densely hairy. During the first year of its growth, mullein becomes a large plant; often more than a foot across, lying close to the ground. During the early summer in the second year of its growth, a tall spike of yellow flowers grows on the mullein plant. Aside from yellow, orange, red-brown, purple, blue or white flowers are also found in many of the species of mulleins. Fruit of mullein plant is a small capsule containing several minute seeds. The plant is popularly used as a medicine in thew treatments of respiratory disorders and asthma. Extracts from the flowers are effective in the treatments of ear infections.
