Hollyhock is a genus of flowering plant of about 60 species native to southwest and central Asia especially China. Hollyhock is one of the most favorite flower and garden plant in the United States and many other parts of the world. Hollyhock belongs to mallow family. The plant is usually biennial or short-lived perennial plant that grows to a height of about 3.5 meter. Leaves are broad, rounded and lobed.

Numerous flowers in white or yellow grow on the erect central stem in the wild species of hollyhocks. Flowers may be single or double with plain or frilled petals. Flowers bloom from June to late summer and last for 3-4 days. Ripe fruit breaks into many part each consisting of one large, flat and coin-shaped seed. The plant needs rich and well-drained soil and sunlight. Common hollyhocks, Antwerp hollyhocks and marsh mallows are few of the commonly known species of hollyhocks. Hollyhocks are popular ornamental and garden plants. Besides the colors found in the wild plants, flowers with dark purple, red and other various colors are developed for garden plants.

Heliotrope is a genus of plants with about 250 species native to warm and temperate climates all over the world. Many species have been developed along the Atlantic coast and throughout the southern states of USA. The name heliotrope comes from Helios meaning sun in Greek. The plant turns its leaves to sun and thus the name heliotropes. Heliotrope is a small, shrub-like or herb-like plant that grows from 1-4 feet tall. Heliotrope has oval or oblong leaves. Fragrant flowers appear in summer and may have white, violet or blue colors. Flowers grow in clusters facing sun.

Owing to its beautiful flowers and fragrance, heliotropes are very popular among the florists, garden heliotropes being the most favorite. Few of the species of the plant are used in making perfumes. The sap of European heliotropes was commonly used as a food-coloring agent in the early French cuisines. In South Europe, common heliotrope is often used in making perfumes.

Heath is a term commonly applied to uncultivated land covered with low-growing woody vegetation and shrubs on acidic soils. The word heathen is usually applied to a person living on heath landscape, typically to the rural country dwellers. Heath areas develop abundantly in warm and dry climatic conditions, particularly in summer. Besides, low-fertile, acidic, and sandy soils are the ideal conditions for the growth of heathland. Shrubs on heaths are usually low, mostly 0.2-2 meter high. Shrubs that develop in heaths have small evergreen leaves and bell shaped flowers. Flowers grow in spikes and are lilac-rose. When tender, the plants are used as fodders. Long stems are often used in making brooms. Heaths, dunes and moors have similar origins.

Goldenrod is a yellow flowering plant that has about 120 species, mostly native to North America. In USA, goldenrod is often considered as the national flower and in many states; it has been adopted as the state flower. Goldenrods grow at many places including mountains, plains, swamps, dry areas, meadows, ditches, pastures, roadside, waste areas and by the sea. Due to its typical bright yellow flowers, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish various species. Goldenrods are often mistakenly blamed for causing hay fever.

Goldenrods vary in size from less than one foot to as high as eight feet. Leaves can be notched or smooth. Stems may be smooth or hairy. However, all the species have tiny flowers that grow in thick clusters or long plumes at the end of slender stems. Flowers are followed by feathery fruits and seeds. Goldenrods are perennials and bloom in summer or early fall. Goldenrods are widely used as decoration flowers. At many places, they are considered as a sign of good luck or good fortune while at some places they are thought as weeds.

Gladiolus is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family. The genus has about 260 species out of which about 250 species are native to Sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. Gladiolus has broad and flat leaves that resemble the blades of sword. In some parts of the world, it is also called as sword lily. Gladiolus is generally developed from bulbs, which should be planted about 3-5 inches apart and about five inches deep in garden beds.

Gladiolus species from very small to spectacular giant flower spikes in commercial varieties. Attractive perennial herbs are semi hardy in temperate climates. The plant grows from rounded, symmetrical corms that are developed in several layers of brownish and fibrous tunics. Stems are generally unbranched and produce 1-9 narrow, sword shaped leaves enclosed in a sheath. Fragrant flowers spikes are large and one sided. Flowers come in several colors such as pink, red, light purple and white with contrasting markings in white, red or orange. Various hybrid varieties have been developed for ornamental flowers and cut flowers.

Ginseng is a genus of 11 species of slow growing perennials with fleshy roots. It grows in the cooler climates in Northern Hemisphere, in eastern Asia, mostly in China, Korea and eastern Siberia. Southern most ginsengs were discovered in Vietnam. Ginseng is a low plant with three to five leaves on top, each leaf consisting of five leaflets. The plant has a long and fleshy root, shape of which resembles to human body. The name ginseng is derived from the Chinese term meaning ‘like-human-body’.

Ginseng is used extensively in Chinese medicines. Roots of ginseng are taken orally as aphrodisiacs, nourishment stimulants, and sexual dysfunction in men and in the treatments of Type II diabetes. Besides the medicinal use, ginseng is also used in popular energy drinks, tea and varieties of food items and cosmetic preparations. Ginseng is often promoted as a product that increases the body resistance against stress. In the modern science, although several controversies exist about the efficacy of ginseng as a medicine but it has often been widely acknowledged as an excellent dietary supplement.
