Day Lily is a common flowering and garden plant with diverse colors and forms. Hemerocallis is the scientific name for day lily, which is a Greek word, meaning day and flower. Flowers of most of the species open at sunrise and wither at sunset. It is often thought that another flower on the same stem replaces them next day. Some of the species are also night blooming. Day lilies occur at clumps including leaves, the crown and the roots. Wild day lilies are usually yellow or orange and bloom in June and July. Hybrid and garden varieties are red and bloom through a longer period.

Originally, native from Europe to China, Korea and Japan, day lilies are nowadays grown in gardens in North America, Europe, and Asia and at many other countries throughout the world. In USA, day lilies are accepted as the most adaptable landscape plants. Hemerocallis is one of the most hybridized plants among all the garden plants. Hybrid plants have numerous colors including red, purple, lavenders, near black and near white, among other. Blue day lily has not yet been hybridized. Flowers of some of the species are edible and used in Chinese dishes such as hot and sour soup. Besides, the plant has also been used in medicines.
