Bachelor’s Button is a small annual flowering plant native to Europe. The plant grows to about 40-90 cm high with grayish green branched stems. Its small flowers are shaped liked and thus the name Bachelor’s Button. Flowers are usually blue but some of the varieties may have pink, purple or white blossoms. Bachelor’s buttons are also called as cornflowers or bluebottles.

Originally, Bachelor’s button grew wild in Europe, north of the Mediterranean, but later on, it has spread widely in many parts of the world. In fact, it often grew as a weed in crop fields growing grains such as wheat, rye, barley or oats. In North America, Australia and other countries, the plant has been naturalized as an ornamental plant in gardens. The plant has also been often prized historically for its blue pigment. It is also often used as an ingredient in tea blends and herbal teas. As per the folklore, Bachelor’s Button was worn by young men in love. If the flower faded quickly, it was construed that the man’s love was unrequited.

Baby’s-Breath is a genus of about 100 species of flowering plants native to Europe, North Africa and Asia. Other than USA, the plant is known by the name Gypsophila. Several species of Baby’s-Breath are found in calcium rich soils including gypsum. It is a garden plant that grows 2-3 feet tall and has widely branching stems. The plant is grown in front of shrubbery in rock gardens. Florists often mix tiny white flowers of Baby’s-Breath among larger flowers in bouquets for providing a beautiful and delicate look.

Baby’s-Breath is a herbaceous, annual and perennial plant. Leaves are linear to triangular 1-7 cm long and 2-8 mm broad. Flowers grow in large inflorescences, which could be dense, open or lax. Each flower is small with a diameter of 3-10 mm and with five white or pink petals. Baby’s-Breath is often grown as ornamental plants in gardens. The plant is easy to grow and can often be found in dry and open places.

Artichoke is a perennial flowering plant native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean. The plant grows about 5-7 feet tall with deeply lobed, arching and silvery green leaves. Flowers of Artichoke develop in a large head from an edible bud with numerous triangular scales. Edible portion of the buds mainly consists of the fleshy lower potions and the base. Artichoke is a vegetable with very delicate flavor. Edible buds are sold fresh or canned and can be eaten boiled, baked, fried, stuffed and in salads and soups.

New plants of Artichoke are generally grown from sprouts or shoots of the older ones. The plants can live for years. Commercial varieties of Artichoke are usually replanted every three or four years. Although Artichoke is technically a perennial but certain species are also grown as annuals that provide a limited harvest at the end of the first growing season. Commercial Artichoke requires good soil, regular watering and feeding in addition to frost protection during winter. Peak season for Artichoke harvesting is the spring. Under standard conditions, Artichoke can remain fresh for two weeks. Besides its use as food, Artichoke is also an attractive plant for its bright floral display. Occasionally, Artichoke is grown in herbaceous borders for its bold foliage and large purple flowerheads.

Arbutus is a genus of flowering plants native to warm temperate regions of the Mediterranean, Western Europe and North America. Due to the superficial resemblance of fruits to Strawberry, European species are generally known as Strawberry Trees. Arbutus is one of the loveliest spring flowers. In Massachusetts, Arbutus is the state flower and often known as Mayflower. Several evergreen plants ranging in size from the tiniest plant to a tall tree are known by the name Arbutus, trailing Arbutus being the most common species.

With its fragrant clusters of waxy white blossoms often tinged with pink, Arbutus is considered as the most attractive wild flowers in North America. Arbutus grows best in sandy or rocky soils especially in pinewoods, where it creeps along the ground almost hidden beneath dry needles and leaves. In Vancouver islands, Arbutus bark and leaves are often used to crate medicines for cold, stomach problems, tuberculosis and as the basis for contraceptives. Although the fruits of Arbutus are edible but it is rarely eaten, as it has minimal flavor. Besides, Arbutus is a great fuelwood because it burns hot and long.
