Anthurium is a large genus of about 800 to 100 species native to North and South America. Anthurium, the tropical flowers, is sometimes referred to as ‘Flamingo Flower’ or ‘Boy Flower’ owing to the typical structure of the spathe and spadix. Anthurium is one of the most variable, largest and complex genuses of family. The plants are widely distributed in the wet tropical mountain forests of Central and South America. Most of the Aquarium species grow in Panama, Columbia, Brazil and Ecuador. According the some of the noted botanists, the genus is not found in Asia.

Anthurium plants are also cultivated in greenhouses and gardens. Its leaves are evergreen and heart-shaped. The plant is grown for its beautiful and brightly colored leaves. Anthurium bears very small flowers that are tightly packed on a cylindrical flesh stalk called a spadix. Pink flamingo or flamingo lily is one of the most types of Anthurium. Pink flamingo has a bright pink spathe that lasts for many weeks. Stems of Anthurium plants are short to elongate with a length of 15 to 30 cm. Most of the species of Anthurium can be grown as houseplants or outdoors in mild climates in shady areas.

Annual is a plant that usually grows from seeds, blossoms, produces flowers and seeds and dies withing one year. Annual plant generally refers to a plant that is grown outdoors in the spring and summer and survives just for one growing season. Many food plants including domesticated grains are grown as annuals. Some of the perennials and biennials are also grown in gardens as annuals mainly for convenience. For instance, true biennials such as carrot, parsley and celery are usually grown as annual crops for their edible roots, petioles and leaves respectively. Examples of true perennials that are grown as annuals are Tomato, Sweet Potato and Bell Pepper.

Examples of true annual plants are pea, corn, lettuce, cauliflower, bean, watermelon and marigold. Once the plants die, the seeds live on to produce plants in future. Majority of the annuals live for their whole life from one spring to fall growing season. Winter annual species begin to grow in autumn, live through winter, produce seeds and die the following spring or summer. Annual garden flowers have various colors, shapes, sizes and blooming period. Several desert species have a seed-to-seed life cycle of only few weeks with seeds spending most of the year to survive dry conditions.

Anemone is a genus of about 120 species of flowering plants in the buttercup family native to north and south temperate zones. Anemone, also known as windflower, grows 203 feet high with their leaves on the flower stem. Flowers bloom in spring, summer and autumn. Its leaves are usually divided with sharply cut edges. Generally, on every stem only one flower grows. Anemone is a perennial herb. The plant grows from rhizomes, caudices or tubers. Leaves could be simple, compound or attached with a leaf stalk. Depending upon the species, the plants can grow up to 60 cm high.

Anemone flowers are bisexual and radially symmetric and come in white, purple, blue, green, yellow, pink or red colors. Its fruits are achenes. In North America, wood variety of Anemone is most common that can grow even in high mountainous areas. Besides, Anemone is also grown abundantly in England and Central Europe. Japanese Anemone is considered as the most unusual variety, which grows up to 3 feet height and has flowers that are three inches across. Many of Anemone species are favorite garden plants. The plants grow best in a loamy soil enriched with well-rotten manure. Anemone plants should be dug in below the tubers.

Ageratum is a low growing and popular American herb that grows on small hills and tussocks. It is a perennial plant of flower gardens. Ageratum is a native of tropical regions of Central and South America. The plant grows to a height of 75 cm with fluffy pale blue, lilac, pink or white flowers blooming throughout summer months. Each flowerhead has several tiny and tube shaped flowers that are closely held together. The plants can be grown from seeds planted in early spring if planted indoors or planted little later if planted outdoors. Ageratum plants give small dry fruits.

Ageratum is mainly grown as garden flower for bedding, bordering or in rock gardens. Fully-grown varieties of Hawaii Ageratum grow to a height of around 6-8 inches. Taller varieties growing up to 18 inches height are also available at many places. Blue varieties of Ageratum are most popular. Size and color of Ageratum makes it most ideal for garden flowers, rock gardens, flowerbeds and containers. It is quite easy to grow Ageratum and thus excellent for the beginner gardeners.
