Queen Anne’s Lace is a flowering plant native to temperate regions of Europe, southwest Asia and northeast North America. The plant has other common names such as wild carrot, bird’s nest and bishop’s lace. It is a variable biennial plant that grows up to 1 meter tall from June to August. Tiny flowers grow in umbels to form a flat-topped cluster that looks like lace. Flowers are usually white. However, light pink and pale greenish yellow colored flowers are also found.

Like the cultivated carrots, wild carrots are suitable for consumption as food items only when it is young. Adult varieties become too woody to consume. Small amount of crushed seeds of the plants have been used as a form of natural birth control, the use being first suggested by Hippocrates around 2000 years ago. Research carried out on mice has confirmed that wild carrot disrupts the implantation process and thus reinforcing its reputation as contraceptive. Wild carrot has been introduced and naturalized in North America.

Pictures of Flowers Pitcher Plant Pictures and Pitcher Plant Kind
Pictures of Flowers Pitcher Plant Pictures and Pitcher Plant Kind
Pitcher Plant is the general name for green flowering plants with pitcher-shaped leaves. Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants that have prey-trapping mechanisms in the form of a deep cavity filled with liquid known as pitfall trap. Foraging, flying or crawling insects are attracted to the cavity formed by cupped leaf. The sides of the pitcher are slippery and grooved, which ensure that the insects cannot climb out. The liquid drowns the insects where the body of the insects is gradually dissolved.

Enzymes secreted by the plants or bacteria help in dissolving the bodies of insects. The insects or any other preys are converted into amino acids, peptides, phosphates, ammonium and urea, from which the plant obtains its nutrients, mainly nitrogen and phosphorous. Pitcher plants grow in locations where the soil is poor in minerals and where the soil is too acidic for the plants to grow properly. There are many varieties and species of pitcher plants depending upon the type of mechanism for trapping their prey. Except certain moths and mosquitoes, most of the insects trapped in the pitcher plants are killed.
