Jasmine is a genus of shrubs and vines native to tropical and warm temperate regions of the old world. Jasmine has about 200 species and majority of the species grow as climbers on other plants or on structures such as gates and fences. Some of the species have evergreen leaves and in some of the species, leaves fall in autumn. Jasmine is widely cultivated in the gardens and homes for its flowers. In South and Southeast Asia, many women wear jasmine flowers and its small garlands in their hair as a fashion accessory.

All the species of Jasmine bear shiny dark green leaves and small white or yellow flowers. Sweet smelling flowers grow in clusters, followed by berries. Flowers are delicate and open only at night during the full moon. Jasmine flowers are plucked in the morning when the tiny petals are tightly closed and then they are stored in a cool place until late evening. As the temperature cools, the petals begin to open. Due to its wonderful fragrance, Jasmines are used in perfumes and incense. Jasmine flowers are also widely used to make tea. Chinese people consume Jasmine Flower Tea. Jasmine is the national flowers for many countries including Philippines, Syria, Pakistan, Indonesia, India, Thailand and Japan.
