Ginger is a reed-like tropical plant, underground stem of which is used as a spice for cooking and also consumed wholly as a delicacy or medicine. Ginger has originated in the tropical climates of Asia and it is grown in India, Southeast Asia, West Africa and Caribbean since ancient times. Spanish conquerers took the ginger to West Indies and Mexico. Today, Jamaican ginger is considered as the best variety of ginger.

Ginger plant grows up to 8 feet high. It has leafy stems and green and purple flowers. Flowers grow in dense and cone like clusters on leafless stems. Once the plants upper stems wither, the roots are dug up. Ginger is used and consumed in different ways. In its crude form, it is washed, dried and consumed as a spicy additive to various dishes. It can also be used by scrapping and mixing with lime and water as a tasty beverage. Dried, ground and powdered ginger finds its widespread used in food and beverages. Ginger is commonly used as a medicine for stomach ailments and cold. Ginger oil is used in medicines and perfumes. Young ginger rizhomes are juicy, fleshy and mild in tastes. It is often pickled in vinegar or sherry as a tasty snack. Ginger is used as the most favorite flavor in making tea beverage.
